Plus, with the help of these essentials, you can be sure you’re making the most of your time on the water.

And while you can take this experience pretty much anywhere in the world. You will find that certain spots are more memorable than others. If you want to add new memories to your list, consider packing a few of these must-have items for a fantastic afternoon or evening boat trip.

Remember to keep a water bottle on hand and pour yourself a drink or two when feeling relaxed. The operator or captain of the boat should and is required to drink responsibly. The best part about boating is ensuring it was fun and relaxing and everyone gets home safely. Safety first!

  • Camera/Cellphone

Make sure to have a camera on hand and take photos of your experience. This will help you to look back and remember the good times spent with friends and family on the water. You may even want to document the process of buying your first boat. Purchase a floating watertight cellphone case or bag to ensure no water damage to your phone or camera.
  • Snacks

Nothing like a stomachache or motion sickness ruins a peaceful afternoon on the water. For a snack that’s both tasty and energy-providing, pack some nuts. Nuts have a long shelf life, don’t take up much space in your bag, and taste great while still fresh. Play it safe and pack some Dramamine.
  • Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a must-have for any outdoor activity that involves the sun. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s rays can still be harmful, and wearing polarized sunglasses can help filter out some of the light. If you don’t own polarized sunglasses, consider buying a set to take on your boat ride.
  • Certified life jackets

Even though you may be on a boat that meets a minimum safety requirement, accidents happen. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a certified life jacket for each person on your boat. They’re small, light, and easy to store and can come in handy if someone ends up overboard or gets into trouble.
  • Pick a spot with good views.

When picking a spot to tie up your boat, try to find a place with good views. This can add to the experience of taking your boat out and provide entertainment while waiting. If you have kids in your group, consider picking a spot with some water sports or other activities they might enjoy watching.
  • Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have for any boat ride. Most boat manufacturers recommend that you apply sunscreen 30 minutes before stepping on a boat, but many people forget. It’s easy to forget when you’re in a rush, but putting sunscreen on before you step on the boat can help protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Re-apply as needed throughout the day!
  • A Towel

You’ll be spending a lot of time on the water, so it’s a good idea to bring your towel. Not only will this help you stay clean, but it can also come in handy as a blanket, a seat, and more. You can also buy inexpensive vinyl boat covers in many designs to help protect your boat while looking great.
  • A Hat

If you’re going on your boat ride in the spring, summer, or fall, you’ll get drenched at some point. If you don’t have an umbrella or another form of rain protection, consider packing a hat to help keep you dry. Not only will this help keep you cool and comfortable, but it also can come in handy if you end up in a boat accident.
  • Bottled water

Whether cruising the gulf or sailing around a scenic part of a lake or an expansive river. Getting a little “tipsy” from all the beautiful scenery can be easy. It is imperative to stay hydrated when you are out on the water. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, and cause your body to overheat. Water helps your body keep an average temperature. Not drinking enough water can be very dangerous when you are out on the water and far away from the land.
  • Good company

  • Lastly, bring a friend or two on your boat ride. Whether you go with friends or family, having a co-worker or friend join you on the water can add to the experience. If you choose to go it alone, don't be shy about pulling up to one of the shoals that have other boaters anchored. You are guaranteed to meet some new friends!

Remember to stay alert and enjoy the scenery and your company. Any time spent on your boat will be memorable.
