Boat trips always have the potential for something to go wrong, but that doesn't mean it has to ruin your day. You can lessen the odds of a bad situation by being prepared and bringing the right gear with you on each trip. The best way to prepare is to compile an itinerary beforehand and run through it shortly before you leave, so nothing slips through the cracks- this will ensure everything goes smoothly during your trip.

We've put together a list of tips and good practices below which should ensure safety while out on the water, as well as provide some helpful insights when you're preparing for any boating adventure:

  • One of the easiest things we do or don't do in preparation is making a checklist! A good one takes all guesswork out at home, ensuring packing requirements are met without error every time.
  • Bring plenty of fresh drinking water with ice if possible (ice melts quickly).
  • Pack light snacks like trail mix - granola bars also work great in emergencies.
  • Make sure everyone knows where their life vests are inside or outside the boat cabin area.
  • Check the weather forecast, wind currents/direction if applicable, and marine traffic conditions before leaving and prepare accordingly.

Essential Equipment Needed:

    • Anchors
Although you only need one, having two onboard is good practice. Why do you ask? Well, if you want to anchor your boat onto a beach or sandbar, depending on the current and weather conditions, you might just need to anchor both bow and stern.
    • Inspect Your Equipment
Dock lines, always inspect your lines before launching your boat. Make sure all lines are in good working condition. It’s always a good idea to have extra lines onboard, just in case.
    • Watertight Storage

These are great for cell phones and personal items you want to keep from getting wet. There are many options for watertight storage. Depending on your needs, they have large boxes to small pouches available.
  • A First Aid Kit
Being prepared for an emergency will be very beneficial to you when the time comes. There are many kinds of emergencies, and it is essential to have a first aid kit prepared with things that will help in those specific cases. If you get motion sickness quickly, some medications can also help prevent this from happening on your trip! It's always good practice for any traveler (especially those who may experience traveler's diarrhea) to know how to manage that problem ahead of time, so they're well-prepared.
  • Tool Kit
It’s essential always to have a tool kit on board in case of an emergency. Make sure that you have a suitable tool kit for your boat. Being prepared is vital when boating. Taking steps to avoid being stranded on the water should be your top priority. Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to keep docking and mooring supplies in your tool kit and your essential tools.
  • A VHF Radio
This is important to stay informed of the weather conditions while traveling on the water. A depth finder is also a beneficial tool for boat owners. A depth finder will assist in keeping you in deeper water and helps to avoid getting stuck on a sandbar when the tides are fluctuating.
  • Extra Food Supply
Granola bars, protein bars, and bottled water should always be kept on board; this would be considered an essential piece to your boat's survival gear and a flashlight for nighttime sailing or docking.
